Breast Implants: Gummy Bear Implants

Understanding the Gummy Bear Implant

If you’re looking at breast implants, chances are you’ll come across a popular new kind of implant called gummy bear implants.  Don’t be concerned – this is not some strange twisted way to create implants by surgically injecting gummy candies into your breasts.  It doesn’t feel like gummy bears, either.  And neither is it another standard silicone gel filled breast implant or saline breast implant.  Rather, the gummy bear implant is a new trend in breast implants that a lot of candidates are opting for as opposed to traditional silicone or saline implants.  This article will provide you with all the information you need to know about what gummy bear implants are, who makes them, and their advantages and disadvantages as a type of breast implant for breast augmentation surgery.

What Are They?

Well if they’re not made of gummy bears, what are they made of?  Gummy bear implants are made of a high strength silicone gel that will continue to hold its shape, even if the implant ruptures.  The gel is soft and similar in texture to that of gummy bears, which means that as a breast implant, it looks and feels far more natural than saline implants.  In addition, this high strength silicone gel used in gummy bear implants is so stable and steady that it has only a very small chance of leakage.  It has also been compared to Jello, which retains its natural shape once hardened.  The main comparison to gummy bears comes from the fact that when you sever either a gummy bear or a gummy bear implant in two, both halves retain their shape.  The Food and Drug Administration has approved the original Sientra brand gummy bear implants for plastic surgery.  They have been thoroughly tested in clinical studies.

Who Makes Gummy Bear Implants?

Plastic surgeons Dr. Grant Stevens and Dr. Michelle Spring are the primary producers of gummy bear implants.  Located in southern California at Marina Plastic Surgery in Marina Del Ray or Beverly Hills, these doctors and their gummy bear implants are highly sought after by women all over the world.  Dr. Stevens is the one who coined the term “gummy bear implants” in comparison to the gummy candies.  Many other doctors do not support the gummy bear implant but prefer the standard silicone or saline implants.

Advantages

The main advantage of the gummy bear implant is its firm shape.  The gel within the implant is high in strength and more solid than the gel in standard silicone gel filled implants.  When this implant has been ruptured or cut into, the gel substance does not run.  Therefore, it is much safer than some silicone implants which can leak into the body and cause health problems.  In essence, these implants combine the look, feel, and texture of standard silicone gel filled breast implants with the safety of saline implants.  In addition, their firmness allows them to remain stable.  They do not deflate and last far longer than some other forms of breast implants.  Their firm shape also guards against the tendency to fold or shift location, which can happen with saline implants.  They can also be provided in low profile, moderate profile, and high profile.

Disadvantages

There are a few disadvantages to gummy bear implants.  For instance, the shape is firmly set, which means that if the shape is not agreed upon by both patient and plastic surgeon, the appearance of the breast after the implant has been inserted may not be to the woman’s liking.  Another disadvantage is the incision size.  Saline implants require only a small incision because the saline solution can be injected in after the shell is inserted.  Gummy bear implants, on the other hand, are prepared and filled before insertion.  Therefore, the incisions made to insert the implants are more significant in size.

Why Gummy Bear Implants?

Though they are only newly approved by the FDA in the United States, gummy bear implants are already highly in demand.  Their firmness and safety measures make them highly desirable by women seeking breast augmentation surgery.  You might consider it as one of your options if you are deciding between different types of breast implants for breast augmentation surgery.
