Getting a fuller mouth
If you want to enhance what mother nature did not give you, lip injections may be just the answer. You will probably look at getting lip injections at some point. This page explores options to achieve your dream pout.
Lip Fillers and Plumpers
These are injected into your lips to make them appear larger and plumper. These are also responsible for some of the awful photos we have all seen where a woman looks like a platypus. These fillers are used to enhance what you already have. They come in two variations.
- Permanent Lip fillers
- Non Permanent Lip fillers
The most common lip injections used by plastic surgeons to enhance lips today as follows.
- Artecoll
- Porcine Collagen
- Perlane/Restylane
- Aquamid
- Bio-Alcamid
- Bovine (cow) Collagen
- Human (harvested) Collagen
- Particulated Dermis
Permanent VS Non Permanent lip injections
fillers. The pros and cons of both are pretty obvious. The pros of the permanent lip injection products are that, its durable. You don't have to keep going back for more injections as your lips gently deflate. The cons are that if for any reason you are not happy with the results or volume and shape. You are either stuck with the results or looking at having a surgical procedure to have it taken out. In my opinion, you should NEVER start with a permanent filler. Start with something that will be gone in a few months and allows you to see how you might look if you had bigger lips. Then you can move to a permanent filler or lip implants. This only makes sense when you think about. Try it before you buy it.
Permanent lip injections Products
- Artecoll * (see below)
- Aquamid
- Metacrill
- Silicone based oils
- Silikon
- Adatosil
* Artecolls is combined with PMMA (polymethylmethacrylate). The PMMA is enclosed by other binders that your body will break down. The PMMA is left after this process, much like breast implants are.
PMMA is a controversial injectable product. See our buttock injections page, this talks about PMMA in depth.

Pros related to using Injections for lip augmentation
- Can be built up a little at a time, if a dramatic overnight change is not desired.
- But, if dramatic change is desired this can be accomplished quickly usually within 1 to 2 sessions depending on the type of filler used.
- Mouth looks and feels natural. It remain extremely soft and supple although you need to be aware that they will be slightly more firm when the area of injection is compressed in certain angles.
- Final Lip shape is more controllable. For patients who have uneven lips (top lip more or less full than lower lip) or imbalanced symmetry (right side of lip smaller or larger than left side of lip)
- Up to 80% can be removed with liposuction.
- I could get allergy tested to very that my body would have no reaction to it.
- Injectable's tend to be softer to the touch and less likely to have hard spots as can happen with lip implants.
Cons related to using Injections for lip augmentation
- Lip Injections can become more solid over time. This is not the normal, but if surgical removal is needed to remove tiny encapsulated areas its not what you bargained for..
- Injections can cause infection and allergic reactions. Whenever possible try to get an allergy test.
- Migration of the facial filler to other areas of your face. If the incorrect product is used or too much is used at one time then movement can be a result. Gravity can cause the product to sink to the lowest point. This problem can be avoided by a conservative approach in volume.
Important tip for getting great results.
Are you considering getting a permanent lip enhancement? Take a large amount of photographs of your lips prior to getting a temporary filler. Show the images to the surgeon who will do your implant. They may not be the same person as who handled your injection, show them your desired results and what you looked like before the injections. That way the surgeon has a complete visual framework on your goals and where you started from. Lip injections can have beautiful results, just take a slow approach is the best idea.
